Carl Benson: Founder of Suffolk Latch Company

Carl: Founder of Suffolk Latch Company
Carl Benson began his working life in engineering, initially training as a welder before going on to gain an HNC in mechanical engineering. At the age of 29, he took the leap into self-employment, designing and manufacturing bespoke furniture for the retail sector.
Around 20 years ago, Carl founded the Suffolk Latch Company from a small workshop in the village of Clare, nestled on the Essex–Suffolk border. What began as a small-scale venture has grown into a respected name in architectural ironmongery, offering a curated collection of quality door, window, and cabinet hardware.
Over the years, Carl has built close relationships with both established UK wholesalers and a talented group of manufacturers. Through years of collaboration and mutual trust, they’ve developed a series of exclusive designs unique to the Suffolk Latch Company. These long-standing partnerships go far beyond typical supplier relationships — Carl considers his manufacturing colleagues more like extended family, united by a shared dedication to their craft.
In the spring of 2025, Carl and his wife Sharon have passed the company into the capable hands of their daughter and son-in-law Charlotte & Andrew, who now lead the business into its next chapter. Despite the transition, Carl remains fully involved in the day-to-day, contributing his knowledge, experience, and passion for honest, well-made hardware that stands the test of time.
